Ectoin® is an amino acid derivative responsible for extremophilic bacteria’s ability to adapt to severe climate conditions and hostile environments on earth. It’s Ectoin® that protects these small living beings from harmful environmental influences. Ectoin® was discovered in 1985 and has since been investigated in detail because a substance that protects bacteria can also be of great benefit for humankind.
How does it work? It surrounds both itself and the neighboring cell membranes and proteins with a layer of water. It stabilizes these structures and protects the skin cells from environmental stressors like UV light, pollution, heat, and various allergens, reducing inflammation.
In various studies it has been shown that inflammations of the skin, are reduced by Ectoin®. Due to this property, symptoms of atopic dermatitis (eczema) are reduced substantially.
Ectoin® also reduces the itchiness that is associated with inflammatory skin diseases.
Key properties of Ectoin:
- Guards against UV damage
- Reduces inflammation, calms, and soothes
- Improves skin barrier function and repair
- Improves hydration
- Minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
